I keep finding cool, American-made bags and backpacks online. The only problem is that each design has something I really like and it keeps me from making the all-important decision: which should I buy?
Disclosure: We’ll get a small commission if you buy through the links in this post: Please do!My latest discovery is Triple Aught Design, a California-based firm that designs gear for the adventurist. According to their website, the name Triple Aught Design comes a unit of measurement: “Engineers and machinists use 000 (triple aught) as shorthand for a thousandth of an inch, which has been the high standard of precision tolerance for over a century.”The Azimuth pack, above, is made with weather-resistant material, has 33 liters of storage and can pack in its own pocket. The Fast Pack Litespeed, left, holds 22 liters and the Azimuth Packable Backpack on the right holds 19 liters.
Another thing I like about the company is their transparency about which products use domestic or imported fabric.
I really enjoy the outdoors, especially during the Fall. I can”t wait for the temperature to drop just a bit so I can break out my heavier clothing. When I saw the items from Tom Beckbe I knew I wanted to bring them to your attention. The product line is geared towards hunters, but these garments and bags have a very multi-purpose feel to them. The Tensaw jacket features a waxed shelter cloth shell, a corduroy-lined collar for warmth and – really nice touch – a cotton twill lining dyed in Alabama red clay. Not terribly cold out but you need a little protection and some storage pockets? The Kinsman vest has you covered.Looking for a durable duffle to carry your gear? Check out the Canvas Weekender. The bag is made from waxed army duck canvas and features Horween leather trim. It is also has a waterproof liner. If waxed canvas isn’t your thing, you can opt for this beautiful Horween leather Weekender bag that will patina beautifully with age.
I’m a cyclist so I’m constantly packing my gear into a bag when I travel to a ride or tour. Heck, I even need to pack a bag during the week because sometimes I ride prior to work and shower and change at the office. So I’m a big fan of good bags (check out our big list of Made-in-USA duffel bags).
Today, I’m taking a closer look at the Best American Duffle or BAD for short. They are made in Seattle and the thing that first caught my eye was their size. I could actually fit all my stuff and then some into one of these bags. The Moss and Khaki Number 4 Bag measures 25″ x 16″ x 13″, that is a lot of gear. The Orange and Charcoal Duffle Number 3 measures 21″ x 13″ x 10″.One thing I really appreciate about the BAD duffle is that there are a number of different ways to carry the bag. Shoulder strap, back pack straps and carry handles.
Here are some additional features:
- Constructed to extreme tolerances.
- Rugged CORDURA® nylon fabric, urethane-coated for water resistance.
- Double-stitching and taped seams.
- Nickel-plated, welded, no-rust hardware.
- YKK zippers: rugged enough to hold even overstuffed loads.
The bags are also reasonably priced.
I have come to the realization that, as soon as I think I have a handle on the number of companies making leather goods in the USA, another one comes to my attention. So check out some of these beautiful items from Lifetime Leather Company, located in Arizona. Whether it is a mason jar cozy, dopp kit, duffel or woman’s cross body purse, there’s a wide selection of handmade leather goods in full grain, vegetable-tanned leather with hand-stitching.The Overnight Weekender Duffel.A gorgeous toiletries bag, also called a Dopp kit.Combination leather and fabric woman’s cross body purse.Men’s leather briefcase. This Leather cozy makes a mason jar something special.
There are also a few waxed canvas items thrown in for good measure and even items made from wild boar. What is cool about the boar hides is The owner of the business, Ty Bowman, had a serious accident as a teenager that required him to spent 8 months in bed. That’s when he grew to love making things with his hands.
